Sound Design: Some Hearts/The Midsummer Station

It can sometimes be difficult to nail down display fonts and the quality of them. They are so often used with expressive intent that saying it is right or wrong is tricky. Taking this album at face value I find myself asking questions rather than having answers, which is not a good place to be. First off, I took the liberty of removing the additional flower elements, they were poorly done and were fighting all the other elements of the design for attention. From the looks of the album without them someone thought it just really needed something more (which any designer can be accused of at one time or another).

One thing I did not intend or foresee prior to removing them was how much more cohesive the color of the type would be. Black and red have always been a favorite of designers, typically young designers but let’s not split hairs. Now the black color of her name creates a nice color balance with her garment, the white flower she’s holding frames the title of the album with the subtle white flower that was brushed on and all

lines now lead to her face which is one of the things they’re trying to sell. If they really needed to put something extra in, sometimes a simple ribbon style graphic is all you really need. It brings more attention to the name and the title without taking to much if any attention away from the artist herself.

 

The Midsummer Station

The Midsummer Station is a bit of a mystery to me. You have a portion of it that is very well handled while some of it doesn’t seem to really make that much sense. I’m trying to find merit for the building beyond the this is art. Similar to Carrie Underwood’s album this one has a bit of a sore thumb. The big shadowy fish draws so much attention being directly under the lightest part of the cover art, but the darkest noticeable object as well. The white name should stand out from everything else. If you’re going to put text on an album the text should always be the most important, otherwise why bother?

As you can see from fix 1 even that much is an improvement to the overall composition and it allows the title and band name to stand out as it should. Not only does it stand out but allows the rest of the elements to do the job they were meant to do. The ground and boat cut the top third of the layout following the rule of three’s. The tree that points to the band name and title is now the top of the hierarchy linking the top third to the bottom two thirds in color and eye movement. Is it worth changing the change the story (assuming there is one) of the art for better composition?
