What is the Cruise to The Blues?
In June of each year we get together and do what we call “The Cruise to The Blues”. On this day we enjoy riding down to Buddy Guy’s Legends, listening to the music and raising funds for the benefit of the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Manteno, IL. This was our 22nd year. We are simply a group of independent bikers, about 100 strong, comprised of men and women from different walks of life we are operating engineers, accountants, custom motorcycle builders, lawyers, union stage hands, small business owners, produce brokers, carpenters, custom motorcycle painters, insurance agents, travel agents, bankers, electricians. You name it. Many of us have known each other for over 30 years. In the end what binds us together is our passion for riding motorcycles – mostly Harley Davidson Motorcycles.
“The Cruise to the Blues” is always held on the same Saturday as the City of Chicago Blues Festival. Anyone is welcome to join us. The contribution is generally $25.00 per person. It is a “Poker Run” which involves stopping at several spots and pulling a card in order to develop a poker hand. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place hands. We start at Little Al’s Mokena Inn on Front Street in Mokena, Illinois. Sign up begins at 2:30 pm. We depart at 3:15 pm. We stop at The New Image Lounge in Frankfort, Il and at Mick Shane’s Pub in Blue Island, Il. Then we ride to Buddy Guy’s Legends. We have had a Custom Bike Show, with 5 classes, on Wabash Ave. in front of Buddy’s for the last two years. This year we had approximately 20 custom bikes in the show. With the help of everyone that donated time to work and with the help of everyone that participated we raised $2,972 this year to help with the needs for our Veterans.
Anyone that might want to donate to our cause, at any time during the year, would be welcome to send a check directly to: The Illinois Veteran’s Home at Manteno, 1 Veterans Dr, Manteno, IL 60950-9466. Attn: Kathy Sanzotta, Note on Memo Line: Cruise to the Blues – Members Benefit Fund.
