Mark Maddox’s Intimate Concert Series continues on Tuesday, August 5th with legendary drummer Sheila E. She’s a Grammy nominated percussionist who has collaborated with everyone from Prince and Beyonce to Ringo Starr and Kanye West. Not only an accomplished performer in her own right, she is part of a powerhouse musical family: her father is Pete Escovedo, Tito Puente was her godfather, her uncles Javier and Mario fronted popular bands The Zeros and The Dragons respectively, and her uncle Coke Escovedo played in Santana.
Her earliest hit was “The Glamorous Life,” a 1984 track that topped dance charts for two weeks that summer. The music video, shown below, was nominated for an MTV award for Best Female Video.
She’s been going strong ever since. She spent years playing and working with Prince, then moved on to collaborate with a host of other stars: Phil Collins, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Jennifer Lopez, George Duke, Beyonce Knowles, Ringo Starr, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, and Gloria Estefan, among others.
“We appreciate a diversity of music,” says Mark Maddox. “We want to give people a chance to see high profile artists perform in an intimate environment. That’s what this is all about.”
