Barry Kerzner has an excellent write-up over at American Blues Scene on the late-great record producer, Sir George Martin.
“Not only did he offer new perspectives on how music could be written and arranged,” Kerzner writes, “but he brought vision to how music could be presented as well.”
Innovations such as backwards tape playback, multi-tracking, full orchestration alongside roaring rock passages made his work superior, and consequently, far reaching. Like Frank Sinatra, and Gil Evans, Sir Martin was a musician’s musician in that he could hear things that others did not, and he dared to act on his perspective.
We’d also like to add that, aside from all the studio innovations, much of the Beatles’ genius lies in their ability to assimilate other genres into a popular sphere–blues music included. It takes a sure hand to navigate four highly talented musicians whose interests veer in wildly different directions, and if Sir Martin achieved anything, it was this.
